Helpful Transfer Information

Film Transfer Info
We Transfer the following film types:

16mm film
(with or without sound)
8mm film
Super-8 film
(with or without sound)

We use the Elmo Transvideo Machine to do our film to video transfers. This machine resembles typical film projectors. While projecting the film it converts the images into an analog signal which is then output to the appropriate recording deck. The film is monitored during the transfer process and a very small amount of picture adjustment can be done through the use of the projector's iris control.

Film Footage To Minute Conversion Table

50 feet of 8mm
=> 3.5 minutes
(A 50 foot reel is approximately 3 inches in diameter)

50 feet of Super-8 => 3 minutes
(A 50 foot reel is approximately 3 inches in diameter)

100 feet of 16mm
=> 3 minutes
(A 100 foot reel is approximately 3 inches in diameter)

Other reel sizes vary in footage length and some reels have markings to determine the amount of feet they contain.

DVD Info
Helix uses DVD-R discs. This is the format we find to be the most universal with current DVD players. Please check your DVD player's owner's manual to ensure this format is compatible with your player. After each transfer is completed the DVD disc is finalized and additional footage cannot be added to it.

We use pro-sumer DVD recording decks for video transfers. We record in a standard play mode, which allows each DVD to hold a maximum of 2 hours and 30 seconds of footage. DVDs can also be recorded in a High Quality mode, but this limits each disc's capacity to one hour of footage.

The DVDs we create are meant to archive existing film/video footage and will not allow you to edit and/or manipulate the footage from the disc. If you need to edit your footage, it is recommended that you transfer it to Digital-8, Mini-DV or DV-Cam. These are digital formats that can be manipulated with either a computer equipped with editing software or other proper editing gear.

Slide / Print / Negative Slide Shows

Slides and negatives are individually scanned using a Nikon Slide / Negative Scanner. Prints are individually scanned into our computer using a flatbed scanner. Image files are color corrected, if necessary, then resized and matted for correct video ratio. This process can be extremely time consuming and may require a longer turn-a-round time than anticipated, depending on the lab's workflow.

We ask that orders be limited to a maximum of 200 slides / prints / negatives per customer.

The slide shows we create allow each image to appear on the screen for approximately 5 seconds (screen time can vary upon request) and a small cross fade is used between images to create a fluid transition.
