After 20 years using Nikonos V, I purchased a digital camera.,  Sealife 1000 elite package.  I realize I will need to experiment, but does anyone have suggestions for settings to start with?

Thanks
Ken

I am looking at going to my DSLR from my point and shoot. The cost is pretty high. Kinda like sticker shock here and really wonder if it is worth it. Anyway I have a Canon Rebel XSi that I am looking at using with a sea and sea RDX450D housing and the getting the standard flat port for use with the 18-55 lens. I am not into macro but more into zoom and wide angle. I like taking pictures of other divers and larger animals.

So does any one have any experience with the sea and sea RDX450D housing ... thoughts suggestions?

Thanks,

John

Even working in manual camera mode it would be hard to use an SB-101, You would need to find a slave cell adapter that has the Nikonos 3 or Nikonos 5 connector for the flash.  Such an item did exist twenty plus years ago.  I have not seen one for sale in at least ten years. It would be difficult to rig one yourself, even if you had a female Nikonos 3 or 5 connector available. Better to go with a more modern flash set up for digital camera operation.

The G-9 was a very good choice. If you go with the Canon housing you will probably be able to use your YS-110 as a slave.  If you select the Ikelte housing (due out in two weeks) you will be able to shoot TTL with an Ikelite strobe, but that costs a lot more than just using your current flash. Enjoy, you have purcahsed a very good camera at a very good price.

USE A LEAD LINED BAG AND ASK FOR HAND INSPECTION AT THE AIRPORT. There are few counties where they give you a hard time about hand inspection. Remember the effect of X-ray is cumulative, one time probably doesn't show up, but multiple inspections do have an effect, even on 100 speed film.

Thanks for the thoughts, Oz.  The number of responses was pretty underwhelming.

I broke down and bought a G9 yesterday.  It was new in the box and on ebay for 369 US.  Ebay had just sent a discount coupon so it ended up 332+7 for insurance.  I still see them locally for 499 and one electronics store has 1 left at 399 but the only one left is an 8 hour drive away and it is an in store only purchase

Now that I have committed I can save for the housing a second ys110 and some real strobe arms. 50 weeks until a two week trip to the Maldives.  Hopefully I will have enough of the new stuff to try out in the quarry by late summer

Hope you have a great holiday season

Coincidence - I have the same camera, the same housing, the same strobe, and the same question.  If it weren't for the slow (& inaccurate low-light) focus, and the tiny LCD, and the slow file writing, I'd keep the Oly forever.  The outfits I've been considering:
Canon G10 with Ikelite housing, or the Nikon P6000, also with the Ikelite housing.  Both have manual settings, shoot raw files, hotshoes for sync cord strobe connection, should focus/shoot faster than our C-5060's, and have received good reviews.  They are similarly priced here (West Australia).
Another cheaper outfit that's popular here is the Fuji Finepix F50fd, with the lightweight, double o-ring Fuji housing.  Inon makes a bayonet lens mount for this housing, onto which you can mount a wide angle or macro lens (or 2 stacked).  It's got a big LCD screen, and aperture/shutter priority modes.  You could build this rig bit by bit.
Good luck!

Hi
What is the best way to travel with film these days? Or can you even do that?

Hi
Is there a way I can use my SB 101 speedlight with my new Ikelite case and canon digital camera?  Maybe someway to use it as a slave with the built in camera flash?

I have been using a Olympus 5060 in one of their housings and would like to get something with a bit quicker shutter response time

I am not glued to Olympus and have a ys110 strobe that seems to not have any of the problems about which I have read.  i have used it as a slave thus far but it is the earlier strobe with a ttl connector as well as the fiber optic slave capability, or so it was advertised at purchase.

I would prefer to stick with another point and shoot style camera as it is used only underwater.  The 35mm lens and port and zoom controls are way beyond what I care to spend or carry with me on vacation.

I enjoy the ease of putting the camera, housing, strobe and computer in a laptop backpack and carrying it on the plane.  I got my wife to pack the wide angle port and adapter lense in her carry on but I had to carry it.

I would like to start with a camera and housing that could do macro and then add a wet wide angle lens and possibly a second strobe.  I will have to get my wife a bigger bag, too.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated

jim
