The 15mm is an extreme wide angle, the equivalent of a 20mm land lens. You have to get close to the subject. Three feet is just too far.

Do you have any other lenses yet? If you are looking for your first lens, go with the 20mm or 28mm. Practice until you feel you need an even wider angle. The 20mm will be far more practical and works well for larger subjects such as people portraits. Get the 28mm and/or 20mm before you invest a house payment.
