John,
Are you shooting with the strobe on TTL? If so, the Nikonos V has only a single TTL sensor. If the foreground subject (the fish) does not fill at least three quarters of the frame, you will get an overexposed image. Also, a silvery fish will reflect a lot of light. You can fool the Nikonos V into compensating TTL by changing the film speed dial, e.g. if you are loaded with 50 speed film, set the camera to 100 speed to underexpose by 1 stop.
You might want to get a copy of Jim Church's "Essential Guide to Nikonos Systems" This is a very useful book aimed at amateur underwater photographers.
Bruce.
: I have a Nikonos V and Aquaflash 28. When I shoot a light subject fish -- with a lot of white or silver-- the portion of the picture with the fish often is over-exposed. What to do? Sorry if this seems like an elementary question, but I'm pretty much an amateur.
