The ProMaster 62mm Basis VND filter reduces the amount of light entering your lens between 2 and 8 stops to help you control exposure.
Reducing light to control exposure is the job of a neutral density (ND) filter. A variable neutral density filter (VND) replaces numerous ND filters by allowing you to change the amount of light it holds back with a simple twist of its ring. A ProMaster Basis VND filter can reduce light by as little as 2 f-stops or as much as 8. And it can be adjusted to any amount in between these values.
There are good reasons to hold back light in still photography as well as videography. Some examples include:
- In still photography, a VND filter can allow your camera to use a slower shutter speed. The slower shutter speed creates blur with moving objects as a creative effect. One example is blurring water to give the impression of movement.
- In videography the camera’s shutter speed (frame rate) is often fixed, leaving the lens aperture to control exposure. Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarized and ProMaster Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc.
They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds.
ProMaster polarizers do not affect the overall color balance of a shot.
It is important that you choose the correct version of ProMaster Polarizer for your camera. Many of today's cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to split the light entering the viewfinder in order to calculate exposure and focusing distance. Polarizing filters can sometimes interact with these items to give unpredictable exposure or focusing. Why use a CPL filter?
A CPL is one of the most highly used filters in both still photography and videography, and with good reason. The effects of a polarizing filter are difficult or sometimes impossible to imitate in post-production software. These effects can be used to create beautiful compositions.
A CPL can:
- Control reflections and/or reduce glare on non-metallic surfaces. I.E. water, glass, glossy paint, etc.
- Improve color saturation and contrast.
- Deepen/darken the blue color of skies.
- Reduce the appearance of atmospheric haze when photographing distant objects and landscapes.

Overview
Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarized and ProMaster Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc.
They also enable colors to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds.
ProMaster polarizers do not affect the overall color balance of a shot.
It is important that you choose the correct version of ProMaster Polarizer for your camera. Many of today's cameras use semi-silvered mirrors or prisms to split the light entering the viewfinder in order to calculate exposure and focusing distance. Polarizing filters can sometimes interact with these items to give unpredictable exposure or focusing. So we recommend that you choose a circular polarizer unless you have a manual focus camera which has no beam splitter.
If you will be using your Polarizing filter on a lens which has a full frame focal length of 28mm or wider, we recommend that you use a ProMaster Digital HD Filter to avoid a possible vignette effect.
